How Automatic Gearboxes Work and Why They Fail
An automatic gearbox uses hydraulic pressure, clutches, solenoids and a control unit to change ratios without you pressing a clutch pedal. Fluid is its lifeblood. It carries heat away, lubricates gears and transmits hydraulic force. When fluid ages, it loses its friction properties and picks up clutch material, which accelerates wear.
