Minor vs Major Car Service: What Is the Difference?

Minor vs major car service explained: what each includes, when you need it and how to save money in Dubai. Call Rise Tech Auto +971 54 306 9940.

Garages use the terms minor service and major service, but customers are often unsure what they actually mean. Is a major service just a more expensive oil change? Do you need one every time? The answers depend on your car and mileage, but the principles are simple.

Short answer: A minor service replaces oil and filters and includes an inspection. A major service does all that and adds larger items such as spark plugs, transmission fluid and extra checks. Alternate them according to your manufacturer’s schedule.

What a Minor Service Includes

  • Engine oil change with fully synthetic oil
  • Oil filter replacement
  • Air filter service and AC filter service
  • All fluid top-up
  • Computer diagnosis
  • Full inspection and car wash
  • Service light reset

It keeps the engine clean and lubricated and catches small problems early.

What a Major Service Includes

  • Everything in the minor service
  • Air filter and AC filter replacement
  • Spark plugs replacement
  • Transmission oil, filter and pan gasket
  • Differential oil (if equipped)
  • AC gas top-up
  • Wheel alignment check and tyre rotation
  • 120-point inspection

How to Decide Which You Need

Mileage since last serviceUsually needed
About 10,000 kmMinor
20,000 kmMinor
40,000–60,000 kmMajor
Unknown historyMajor, to reset the baseline

Which Gives Better Value?

Neither is “better”. Each addresses different components. If you are buying a used car with no history, start with a major service. For regular maintenance, follow the cycle. Our service contract bundles five minor services and one major service to cover about 60,000 km at a fixed price.

Real Examples: What Happens at Each Mileage

Imagine a three-year-old German SUV driven in Dubai. At 10,000 km it needs a minor service with oil, filters and inspection. At 20,000 km, another minor service, with the inspection noting brake pad thickness. At 40,000 km it is time for a major service: new spark plugs, transmission fluid and filter, and a wider inspection of suspension and cooling. By 60,000 km, the second major service coincides with brake discs, coolant and perhaps tyres.

Following this rhythm keeps costs spread out and avoids sudden large bills.

Why Spark Plugs and Gearbox Oil Are Not Minor Items

Spark plugs ignite the mixture thousands of times a minute. As the electrodes wear, the spark weakens. You may not notice it at first, but fuel economy slips, and over time misfires can damage ignition coils and catalytic converters. Gearbox oil is similar: the clutch packs shed tiny particles, and the friction modifiers break down in heat. New oil restores smooth shifting and cools components. These are the main reasons a major service exists.

Do You Need a Major Service Before Selling Your Car?

Not always, but it can help. A major service shows a buyer that you have kept up with maintenance. It also lets a technician identify issues before the buyer’s inspector does. For luxury cars, a recent major service and a clean inspection report can make the difference between a quick sale and weeks of haggling.

Common Mistakes Owners Make

  • Choosing a minor service every time and never doing a major one
  • Assuming “lifetime” gearbox oil means never changing it
  • Buying the cheapest service without checking the oil approval
  • Ignoring brake fluid, which is part of safety
  • Not asking for an itemised list

Minor Service Step by Step

  1. Check-in and scan: we read fault codes from all modules and note existing issues.
  2. Lift and drain: the car is raised, oil is drained, and the drain plug washer replaced.
  3. Filters: oil filter replaced, air filter serviced, cabin filter checked or replaced.
  4. Refill: fully synthetic oil is added in the correct amount and approval.
  5. Inspection: brakes, tyres, suspension, belts, hoses and lights are inspected.
  6. Top-up and reset: all fluids are topped up and the service indicator is reset.
  7. Wash and handover: the car is washed and we explain the findings.

Major Service Step by Step

  1. All steps of the minor service.
  2. Spark plugs are removed and replaced, with ignition coils inspected.
  3. Transmission oil is drained or exchanged, the filter replaced and the pan gasket renewed where fitted.
  4. Differential and transfer case oil is changed on vehicles equipped with them.
  5. AC performance is checked and gas topped up if needed.
  6. Wheel alignment is checked and tyres rotated if recommended.
  7. A 120-point inspection report is produced.

How Long Each Takes

Oil change only30–45 minutes
Minor service2–3 hours
Major service4–8 hours

What If Your Car Has Different Needs?

Some cars follow different intervals. Hybrids may have longer oil intervals but need coolant and brake attention. Turbo diesels have particulate filters that need regular drives. High-performance cars may need frequent brake fluid and differential oil changes. We follow your manufacturer’s plan and tailor it to Dubai conditions.
