Weekend desert trips are part of life in the UAE. Sand and heat are tough on vehicles, but good preparation and aftercare make a real difference.
Before You Go
- Check engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid
- Service or replace the air filter
- Check tyre condition, pressures and spare
- Test brakes and suspension
- Carry water, tow strap and recovery gear
- Make sure the AC and cooling fans work
During the Trip
Lower tyre pressure for sand, keep momentum, avoid excess revs, and watch the temperature gauge. Stop to let the engine cool if it climbs.
After the Trip
- Wash underbody and wheel arches
- Clean radiator and condenser fins
- Check for fluid leaks
- Inspect CV boots and driveshafts
- Re-inflate tyres and check wear
- Replace the air filter if dusty

Tyre Pressures for Sand
Lowering tyre pressure increases the contact patch and helps you float over soft sand. Typical pressures for SUVs are around 15 to 20 psi, but always follow guidance for your vehicle and tyres. Reinflate before returning to tarmac. Carry a compressor and gauge.
Cooling and Air Intake in Sand
Radiators and condensers clog with fine sand, reducing cooling. Blow out debris from behind with compressed air when possible. The air filter is your engine’s first defence, and a clogged filter robs power and increases fuel use. A fresh filter before the trip is cheap insurance.
Recovery Gear Worth Carrying
- Recovery strap and shackles
- Shovel and traction boards
- Tyre gauge and compressor
- First aid kit and plenty of water

Respect the Environment and Others
Stay on established tracks where possible, avoid protected areas, and travel with another vehicle if you can. Good preparation and good behaviour keep the desert enjoyable for everyone.
Cooling Is Everything in the Dunes
Dune driving puts the engine under heavy load at low speed with little airflow. Make sure coolant is fresh, fans operate, and the radiator is clean. Carry extra coolant and water. If the gauge rises, stop in the shade facing into the wind and let the engine idle to cool, then investigate.
Transmission and Differentials
Automatic gearboxes heat up in sand. If you do regular desert driving, consider changing transmission oil earlier and fitting an auxiliary cooler if your vehicle supports it. Differentials and transfer cases need fresh oil, particularly after water crossings or severe use.
Suspension and Underbody
Hard landings and hidden obstacles can bend control arms, damage bump stops and loosen bolts. After rough trips, we put the car on the lift, check all joints, torque key bolts, and inspect skid plates and brake lines.
Which Vehicles We See Most
Our workshop regularly handles Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, Land Rover Defender, Mercedes G-Class and Range Rover vehicles used in desert driving. See pages for Ford, Jeep, Toyota and Nissan.
Pre-Trip Inspection Table
| Item | Check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oil and coolant | Levels and condition | Heat and load stress |
| Air filter | Clean or replace | Sand blocks airflow |
| Tyres | Tread, sidewalls, spare, pressure | Traction and punctures |
| Brakes | Pads and fluid | Descents and recovery |
| Recovery gear | Strap, shackles, shovel | Getting unstuck |
Water Crossings and Wet Sand
After deep water, check air intake, differential breather and wheel bearings. Change differential oil if it looks milky. Brakes may be wet and weak for a while, so test gently.
